REUTERS/Ibraheem Abu Mustafa Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Australia said on Wednesday it had deployed two more military aircraft and a "significant number" of defence personnel to the Middle East to help support its citizens there if the ongoing war between Israel and militant group Hamas escalates. Australia sent a Boeing C-17 aircraft and an air refueler plane that has the capacity to carry passengers, taking the total to three, Defence Minister Richard Marles said. He did not disclose the total number of personnel deployed and where the aircraft would be based due to security reasons but said they would not be based in Israel. "It is a significant number of personnel, though, and they're there to support the aircraft and to support what that aircraft might ultimately have to do," Marles told Channel Nine. Australia on Wednesday also unveiled a new A$20 million ($12.7 million) military package for Ukraine, taking its total aid to A$910 million since Russia invaded in February 2022.

The US Air Force sees all those qualities as vital for success in a war in the Pacific region. US Air Force/Air Force AssociationThe design blends the wings and the fuselage, "decreasing aerodynamic drag by at least 30% and providing additional lift," the Air Force said in a release. Boeing's newest military tanker is the KC-46A Pegasus, which can refuel other planes in midair. Boeing is one of the world's leading defense manufacturers providing advanced military aircraft for the US armed forces and allied nations. While Boeing's defense arm is military-focused, it has used its commercial planes as a blueprint for production. One of its biggest — yet controversial — jets is the KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling tanker, which was derived from the Boeing 767 widebody airliner. The Pegasus is Boeing's newest air refueler, having started production in February 2011 and sending its first to the US Air Force in January 2019.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) said an overnight bargaining session had led to the new Boeing offer and workers will vote Wednesday on whether to accept it. Under the new contract offer, employees can opt to receive an $8,000 lump sum payment -- minus tax withholdings -- upon ratification or can choose to have the entire amount deposited in a 401(k) plan. The company is dropping its revised 401(k) match proposal. The standoff began after the union had criticized Boeing's 401(k) payments in the contract and workers rejected the offer. Boeing's earlier 401(k) offer on Sunday included a company match of workers contributions up to 10% of workers' salaries along with an automatic contribution of 2% for 2023 and 2024.
